There is no such thing as the best treatment for epilepsy, but rather a comprehensive treatment based on the patient’s specific condition through treating the cause, acute treatment, medication, surgery and other methods.
1. Treatment of cause: For patients with epilepsy caused by a clear cause, reasonable treatment can be carried out according to the cause. For example, epilepsy caused by intracranial tumors needs to be removed by surgery; patients with parasitic infections can be treated with anti-parasitic drugs, such as the commonly used mebendazole and albendazole.
2. Acute treatment: Seizures are mostly self-limiting and most patients do not need special treatment.
However, for patients with tonic-clonic seizures or with impaired consciousness, attention should be paid to avoiding falls, and at the same time, the collar and belt should be unbuckled to facilitate breathing; soft objects can be put on the joints to prevent abrasions; and the patient’s head can be turned to the side to allow secretions to flow out and to prevent asphyxiation.
3. Medication: Commonly used drugs include traditional antiepileptic drugs such as phenytoin sodium and carbamazepine. Newer antiepileptic drugs are commonly used, such as topiramate and lamotrigine. They can be chosen according to various factors such as the type of seizure, the size of side effects, the patient’s age and gender.
4. Surgery: If the patient is not effective after a long period of formal drug treatment and the epileptic foci are clearly localized, anterior temporal lobectomy and hippocampal resection can be considered for treatment.
The specific treatment of epilepsy needs to be carried out under the guidance of doctors and timely consultation.
