Can routine blood tests detect leukemia?

Routine blood tests can detect leukemia, but cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Routine blood tests include red blood cell count, white blood cell count, platelet count and hemoglobin level.

Patients with leukemia will have abnormal increase or decrease in white blood cell count, decrease in red blood cell and hemoglobin, decrease in platelet count, and increase in the proportion of abnormal cells, etc. If the blood routine has the above manifestations, leukemia can be suspected, but the diagnosis can not be confirmed, and further bone marrow aspiration examination is needed.

Some leukemia patients blood routine changes are not specific, such as hypoproliferative acute leukemia, most of the blood picture shows a decrease in whole blood cells, and secondly, leukemia classified as acute promyelocytic, blood routine examination will also show a decrease in the three lineages, both diseases need to be identified with aplastic anemia, which can not be identified by blood routine alone.

If leukemia is suspected in routine blood tests, it is recommended to consult a doctor in time and complete the relevant tests under the guidance of the doctor.
