Acute epiglottitis can be life threatening in a few days

Acute epiglottitis is a relatively dangerous disease in ENT. In the past, due to the lack of medication, patients were not treated in a timely manner and allowed to develop the disease, which may be life-threatening for some patients in less than a week. However, at present, due to the patients’ increased awareness of the disease and treatment with effective antibiotics, death rarely occurs. Acute epiglottitis is mainly characterized by sore throat, dyspnea, dysphagia, generalized fever and other symptoms. Clinical examination reveals a spherical or hemispherical bulge on the lingual surface of the epiglottis, restriction of the epiglottis’ elevation, and narrowing of the laryngeal inlet. Generally for this disease, clinically applying sufficient amount of antibiotics, hormones for anti-inflammatory treatment, most of the patients will have a week or so symptoms will have obvious recovery, so that the probability of dyspnea and death by asphyxiation is very small.
