How to recognize and treat thirst in Chinese medicine

Thirst needs to be differentiated to identify and treat different conditions, mainly depending on whether thirst is followed by a desire to drink more water, combined with other symptoms, and identified by the four diagnoses. 1. Thirst for more water. If thirst and dry throat, dry nose and dry lips, it is mostly due to dryness and injury to fluid, and can be combined with Mulberry and Apricot Soup. If thirst prefers cold drinks and the body is hot and the face is red, it is mostly due to the blazing of internal heat (serious heat in the body) that depletes the fluid, and can be combined with Baihu Tang. If thirst is accompanied by excessive drinking and hunger, it is mostly due to thirst-quenching disease. If there is a combination of loose food and loose stools (thin and unformed feces), or a decrease in diet, lack of energy, weakness of limbs and thinness, it can be combined with Seven-flavored Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae; if there is excessive urination, emaciation and dryness of feces, it can be combined with Jade Maiden Decoction. 2. Thirst and not drinking much. The patient has the feeling of thirst, but does not drink much, which is caused by the obstacle of fluid transportation. If the patient has cold (fear of cold) and fever, dry mouth and slight thirst, it is mostly wind-heat syndrome, and can be treated with Yin Qiao San. If there is thirst without much drinking in warm diseases, and the body is hot at night and the tongue is red, it is because heat has entered the camp, so it can be combined with Qingying Tang. If thirst is accompanied by drowsiness and heaviness of the head and body, with yellowish and greasy tongue, it is mostly due to dampness-heat, and may be combined with Sanren Tang. The adverse effects of the above formulae are not clear. In addition, profuse sweating or perspiration, too much violent vomiting, and too much diuresis may also lead to a large loss of body fluid, resulting in thirst, which will not be discussed here. If the symptoms are serious, prompt medical attention is needed to identify the cause and standardize the treatment.
