Why do coronary heart patients take medication when their blood lipids are normal?

”Why do I need to take lipid-lowering medication when my blood lipids are normal?” I often have patients ask me this question. In fact, this truth is as simple as saying that just because we have had a full lunch does not mean we do not need to eat dinner again. Epidemiological surveys show that hypercholesterolemia is one of the most important risk factors for coronary heart disease. There is substantial medical evidence that lowering blood cholesterol levels with statins can substantially reduce cardiovascular events. Moreover, if you have coronary heart disease, then you should take the drugs even if your blood lipids are normal, because in addition to lowering blood lipid levels, these drugs have the effect of inhibiting inflammatory responses and stabilizing atherosclerotic plaques, thereby preventing cardiovascular events. Roberts, editor-in-chief of the American Heart Journal, has pointed out that “statins are a fantastic class of drugs that are as effective against atherosclerosis as penicillin is against infectious diseases, and patients with coronary artery disease need to use this class of drugs to the fullest.” Since atherosclerotic disease is a chronic disease that involves the arteries of the whole body, treatments such as thrombolysis and stenting can only relieve the clinical symptoms of patients by improving local blood flow and do little to benefit the occurrence and development of atherosclerosis, while the effect of statin lipid-regulating drugs on the disease is long-term, therefore, patients with high blood lipids and coronary heart should take the drugs for a long time in order to achieve a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease attacks . For various reasons, the use of this class of drugs, which can both prevent and cure diseases, is not yet adequate in our country. There are many reasons for this, such as lack of awareness of the dangers of cholesterol, belief in advertised health products, excessive belief in dietary therapy, fear of side effects of drugs, economic reasons, etc. Since the effect of this treatment is clear and effective, patients who need to use lipid-regulating drugs for treatment should eliminate their worries and regulate their use under the guidance of doctors to achieve the best results. Although drugs have side effects, in the face of cardiovascular diseases that are “like a tiger”, it is important to prioritize and not to waste food because of choking.
