Chinese medicine treatment of thyroid adenoma

Thyroid adenoma is the most common benign tumor of the thyroid gland, the cause of which is still not fully understood, but may be related to excessive secretion of long-term thyroid stimulating hormone. It is believed to be due to emotional discomfort, liver qi stagnation, qi stagnation and blood stasis, and liver qi offending the spleen, which leads to loss of spleen health and internal production of phlegm and turbidity, causing qi, phlegm and stagnation of phlegm and stasis to form swellings. The masses are single or multiple, round or oval, with smooth surface, clear border, soft texture, no pressure pain, and can move up and down with swallowing action. Due to the slow growth of the mass, patients generally have no obvious discomfort, and a few have sputum, discomfort of obstruction in the throat, and a feeling of fullness. After the mass gradually increases in size, patients may feel breath-holding or pressure, especially when lowering or tilting the head, the above discomfort is more obvious. Surgery is effective in treating thyroid adenomas in Western medicine, but there is a high recurrence rate after surgery in multiple cases. The cause of recurrence is still unknown and may be related to chronic thyrotropin stimulation, thyroid radiation and iodine deficiency, and intake of goitre-producing substances. Combined internal and external treatment of thyroid adenoma in Chinese medicine, although slower, is effective and has a low recurrence rate, and can save patients with multiple thyroid adenomas from having to go under the knife several times. Generally speaking, the combination of internal and external treatment in Chinese medicine is mainly based on internal use, and the internal use of tonics is the most effective because it can be personalized according to the diagnosis and classification. The treatment is usually based on the identification of the patient’s type, such as Chai Hu, Radix Aromaticus, Chen Pi, etc., to dredge the liver and regulate the Qi, Sheng Huang Qi, Prince Ginseng, Atractylodes Macrocephala, Poria, etc., to benefit the Qi and strengthen the spleen, Seaweed, Sea Fushi, Kun Bu, Oyster, Whole Guadua, Ginger Panax, White Mustard Seed, Bayberry, etc., to resolve the phlegm and soften the firmness, Trigonella, Curcuma longa, Shi Shi Jian Dang, Tao Ren, Dan Shen, etc., to invigorate the blood and remove blood stasis. External treatment The external treatment method, that is, the external application of ointment, generally is a ready-made medicine, the main drugs are also selected from these drugs, fixed in the affected area with a rubber plaster, to warm the meridians and blood, dispersing cold and resolving phlegm. During the treatment period, it is best to continue to apply the plaster all day long, sleep is also used, once a day to change the medicine, when the bath can be uncovered first, after the bath continue to apply. If you can’t wear high-collared clothes in summer in order not to affect the beauty, you can also not use it during the day but only at night. The combination of internal and external Chinese medicine method for treating thyroid adenoma has good effect on both the initial and recurrent cases. Generally, 3 months of treatment is a course of treatment. After 2 courses of treatment, the efficacy of treatment can be judged according to the ultrasound examination results, combined with the doctor’s manual examination and self-perception (such as the improvement of the feeling of neck distension and throat obstruction). In most patients, the lump can be significantly reduced, and in about 45% of patients, the lump can be completely eliminated. However, for cystic thyroid adenoma, the efficacy is relatively poor. If the mass does not shrink significantly after 3-6 months of TCM treatment, or if it is accompanied by hyperthyroidism, or if the mass increases rapidly in the short term, or if it is hard and suspected to be malignant, surgery should be considered in a timely manner.
