If the patient has a fracture of the sternum or ribs caused by trauma, or a contusion of the surrounding soft tissues, the symptom of soreness behind the sternum will appear in this case. In addition, if the patient has a cardiac disease, such as coronary atherosclerotic heart disease, unstable angina pectoris, myocarditis, pericarditis, or heart valve disease, pulmonary heart disease, then there will be soreness behind the sternum, the above diseases are due to coronary artery stenosis, spasm, resulting in ischemia triggered by the pain. If the patient has a disease of the chest wall, such as intercostal neuralgia or even herpes zoster, there will also be soreness in the posterior part of the sternum.
