Blepharoplasty Care Begins in Children

With the increasing popularity of electronic devices and the deteriorating environment, dry eye has become one of the most common diseases in ophthalmology. While adults are plagued by the various symptoms caused by dry eyes and seek various ways to relieve them, they often overlook the fact that our children are also growing up in such a lifestyle and environment. One week ago, I came across an 8-year-old child in the clinic. He came to our hospital because of frequent blinking. The child was unable to express exactly what was wrong with him, and the routine eye examination really did not find any cause. He was given a full dry eye examination. The results were alarming. This 8 year old child’s blepharoplakia was actually morphologically like that of a 40 year old adult, with atrophy of more than a quarter. Also from the clinic, a 5 year old baby’s blepharoplasts looked like this (below), and with blepharoplasts like this, the quality of the tear water must be poor. (The relationship between the function of the glands and dry eyes can be seen in the previous article, “Are your eyes dehydrated”). WARNING: Parents often focus on whether their children’s eyesight is good or not, and whether myopia is deepening, but ignore the damage that the popularity of electronic products and environmental degradation may cause to children’s ocular surface (including the quality of tears and the state of the lid gland). These damages are often subtle and silent. By the time a child comes to the hospital with various symptoms of discomfort, blinking, etc., irreversible lesions may have already occurred. For example, an atrophied blepharoplasty gland cannot be restored, and there is nothing the doctor can do about it. Therefore, it is important to take care of the blepharoplastine glands, starting with children. Parents are urged to have regular checkups of their children’s eye surfaces, so that they can be detected and treated as early as possible, and to take care of the blepharoplastine glands, starting with their children.
