Tincture of iodine is often referred to as iodine, which is mainly used for skin disinfection and has a preventive effect against infections. As the name suggests, iodine has an alcohol component and is made from iodine as well as potassium iodide solution in alcohol solution. Because the iodine content is higher than that of iodophor, the bactericidal effect is stronger than that of ordinary iodophor. Because of the high concentration of iodine, tincture of iodine is more irritating to the mucous membrane of the skin and can cause burns to the skin and mucous membranes. The skin will peel and even blister after use, and patients will feel stinging and burning pain after applying it to wounds, so deiodination with alcohol is required after using tincture of iodine. Deiodination is done by dipping a cotton swab into the tincture of iodine and applying it, disinfecting it, waiting for 1 minute, and then applying it with 70% alcohol. It is also important to note when using tincture of iodine that it is not suitable for use on broken skin, eyes, and oral mucosa.
