Dry mouth and tongue may be caused by physiological factors such as insufficient water intake and dry weather, or it may be caused by diseases such as dry syndrome and diabetes.
1. Physiological factors: If the recent water consumption is low or the weather is dry, it will lead to dry mouth and tongue, which is normal.
2. Dry syndrome: dry syndrome is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease, mainly manifested as dry mouth and eyes, the causes include genetic factors, viral infections, estrogen levels are too high.
3. Diabetes mellitus: the causes of diabetes mellitus include genetic factors, insulin resistance and β-cell function defects, autoimmunity, etc. Typical symptoms are “three more and one less”, i.e., polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia and weight loss. Increased urination leads to intracellular dehydration, which stimulates the thirst center and leads to dry mouth and tongue.
There are many causes of dry mouth and tongue, and medical examination is recommended after physiological factors have been ruled out.
