Effects of the Chinese herb Atractylodis Macrocephalae

Atractylodes macrocephala is sweet and warm, and belongs to the spleen and stomach meridians. It can nourish qi and strengthen the spleen, dry dampness and induce diuresis, stop sweating and tranquilize the fetus. It can be used to treat shortness of breath, loss of appetite and abdominal distension caused by deficiency of spleen and stomach qi. It is effective on its own, and even more effective with ginseng. It is ineffective when used alone, and is more effective when combined with ginseng. It is ineffective when used for weak spleen and stomach, which may lead to food accumulation and abdominal distension, and can be combined with Citrus aurantium. Weakness of the Spleen and Stomach with fear of cold is a result of improper treatment of Spleen-Qi deficiency, which has developed into Spleen-Yang deficiency, and can be combined with Gan Ginger and Ginseng. Weakness of Spleen and Stomach with prolapse of internal organs, such as yin ting and gastroptosis, can be used with Astragalus and Ascophyllum. Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae has the effect of strengthening the spleen and inducing diuresis, and raw Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae is effective. Constipation caused by deficiency of the spleen and yang-ming without descending can be used with Radix Astragali and Radix Angelicae Sinensis.
