Common causes of facial edema include nephrogenic edema such as nephrotic syndrome, Cushing’s syndrome, and hypopituitarism.
1. Nephrogenic edema: common diseases include nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis and so on. Its pathogenesis is mostly due to the decrease of renal excretion of water and sodium, resulting in sodium retention and increase of extracellular fluid, thus causing edema. It is often manifested as early morning eyelid and facial edema, which extends to the whole body, develops rapidly and has great mobility.
2. Cushing’s syndrome: Typical manifestations are full moon face, buffalo back, and significant facial edema. The pathogenesis is usually adrenocorticotropic hormone secretion, causing sodium retention, which leads to edema.
3. Hypopituitarism: mostly manifested as facial mucous edema, mostly associated with pituitary pathology leading to thyrotropin deficiency.
If facial edema is found in daily life, it is recommended to go to a regular hospital to avoid delaying the condition.
