Can eye mites infect your family?

If a patient has mites in the eye area, they may be transmitted to family members through close contact or exposure to contaminated household items.
Mites are tiny animals that can parasitize the surface of human skin and can be transmitted to each other through some direct or indirect contact. Mites are parasitic on the surface of the skin and generally do not cause disease, but may cause acne and skin infections if there are too many mites in the environment or if one’s immune system is weak.
Patients with mite infections should keep their living environment clean, such as disinfecting shoe insoles, sofa cushions, bedsheets, carpets and other items that tend to harbor mites by exposing them to sunlight in a timely manner. Patients should also use toiletries separately from their family members to avoid direct or indirect contact and transmission of mites to family members.
Patients infected with mites are advised to seek prompt medical attention to assess their condition and to take treatment and care under the guidance of a doctor.
