The main points of diagnosis of Yue Maiden Garjutsu Tang are swelling of the head, face and upper body, fever, malignant cold (fear of cold) and body pain.
The original formula of Yue Maiden Garjutsu Tang is from “The Essentials of the Golden Chamber”. This formula is composed of ephedra, ginger, jujube, gypsum, licorice and atractylodes. It is effective in dispersing wind and draining heat, promoting sweating and inducing diuresis. This formula is mainly used in treating oedema of Pi Shui (oedema with swelling of the whole body, low urine output and abdominal distension), which is characterized by swelling of the whole body, face and eyes, fever, malignant wind, and dysuria (unruly urination).
In this formula, ephedra and ginger promote circulation, gypsum can clear the heat of internal depression, jujube and licorice can help to harmonize the middle. If the swelling of the whole body is serious, Atractylodes macrocephala can be added. Atractylodes macrocephala combined with ephedra can enhance the effect of diuresis to reduce swelling. The combination of all the herbs can help to relieve wind and heat, and promote sweating and diuresis. The adverse effects and contraindications of Atractylodes macrocephala are not clear.
