Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infects more than 185 million people worldwide. Twenty percent of HCV chronically infected patients progress to cirrhosis. In the United States, there are approximately 3 to 4 million people with HCV infection with chronic liver disease. less than half of those with HCV infection are detected. There are approximately 10 million people with chronic hepatitis C virus infection in this country, and about 2 million patients have been detected and treated. For various reasons, there are still undetected or untreated hepatitis C patients whose disease is progressing further. In fact, most hepatitis C viruses can be cleared and the disease can be cured. HCV genotype 1 infected patients should receive sofosbuvir + pegylated interferon + ribavirin treatment because of the short treatment time and high SVR rate (89%-90%). Simeprevir + pegylated interferon + ribavirin is an alternative treatment for patients with HCV genotype 1 infection (SVR, 79%-86%). patients with HCV genotypes 2 and 3, which account for 20%-29% of HCV infections in the United States, should receive sofosbuvir + ribavirin monotherapy (SVR for genotype 2, duration of treatment 12 weeks: 82%-93%; SVR for genotype 3 with a treatment duration of 24 weeks: 80%-95%). We should individualize treatment according to the patient’s condition.
