Informal venues for cosmetic tattooing are at high risk for hepatitis C

Hepatitis C, as a disease with a low infection rate, why is the number of cases increasing year by year? In this regard, Wei Lai, director of the Chinese Medical Association’s Division of Hepatology and deputy editor-in-chief of the Chinese Journal of Liver Diseases, said that there are two main groups of high-risk groups for hepatitis C in China, one being patients infected with hepatitis C through blood transfusion in the 1980s and early 1990s, and the other being patients who have cosmetic, tattooing, or dental treatments in non-formal medical settings. The root cause of hepatitis C infection through blood transfusion in the last century was the lack of screening of blood donors for hepatitis C. Since the screening of blood donors in 1993 and the implementation of the Blood Donation Law in 1998, the number of patients infected with hepatitis C through blood transfusion has decreased significantly. Currently, transfusion hepatitis C infections are rare. As for the people infected with Hepatitis C virus recently, Wei Lai analyzed that because Hepatitis C has the characteristic of blood transmission, the patients were infected with Hepatitis C virus mainly due to unclean medical operation, including dental treatment in informal medical places, cosmetic treatment and tattooing in non-sterilized and strictly controlled and managed places, etc. In addition, some patients were infected with Hepatitis C virus due to blood transfusion. In addition, some people are also infected with hepatitis C through intravenous injections.
