The liver is the largest digestive gland in the body and the center of metabolism in the body. It is estimated that there are more than 500 chemical reactions that occur in the liver. Specifically, the liver is mainly engaged in the following five “jobs”. 1. Synthesis function Grains and cereals are hydrolyzed by the digestive tract into glucose and then transported to the liver, where a portion is stored as glycogen for later use. The amino acids absorbed by the digestive tract are also used in the liver for protein synthesis, deamination and transamination. The liver is also the main synthesis site of many coagulation factors, of the 12 coagulation factors in the body, 4 are synthesized in the liver. 2.Decomposition function The liver is the main detoxification organ of the body, it can protect the body from damage. Certain metabolic wastes in the body or the corruption products of intestinal bacteria and the drugs taken are processed by the liver, and the toxic substances become pentotoxic, less toxic or easily soluble substances are excreted from the body, and this process is detoxification. 3.Filtration function Hormones are synthesized in the endocrine organs to regulate various body functions in minute amounts. Most hormones undergo chemical changes in the liver and are excreted. Therefore, when liver disease is severe, there will be an imbalance of hormone levels, affecting the normal function of the body. 4.Storage function The liver can store fat-soluble vitamins, 95% of the body’s vitamin A is stored in the liver. The liver is also the storage and metabolism site of vitamin C, D, E, etc. The liver also stores more iron than the blood. 5.Production of bile Bile is a digestive fluid that helps absorb lipids and fat-soluble vitamins. The liver produces bile, which is then transported to the gallbladder where it is stored, concentrated in the gallbladder, and discharged into the duodenum. Although the liver does so much for our health, it is a silent organ that never actively reports what is going on, yet it is very important for us to know what the liver does so that we can match its workflow on our schedule and take care of it.
