There are no clear surgical indications for the removal of thrombus filters, which is mainly based on the need for the product in which the filter is placed and the patient’s specific situation.
The main purpose of placing a thrombus filter is to intercept dislodged venous thrombus and prevent the occurrence of acute pulmonary embolism, thus ensuring the safety of the patient’s life. Depending on the material and product requirements of the preventive filters, they are mainly categorized into short-term placement filters and permanent filters.
If the permanent filter used by the patient has not been displaced or clogged, it generally does not need to be removed. If a short-term filter is placed, it is usually necessary to remove the filter in a timely manner after the patient’s condition has stabilized, about 3 to 6 months after surgery.
Therefore, patients with venous thrombosis who have had filters placed should be reviewed regularly to monitor their treatment. Depending on the specifics of the filter and the recovery of the patient’s condition, the filter should be removed as appropriate.
