Can ovarian cysts disappear on their own?

A proportion of ovarian cysts can disappear on their own in clinical practice. In ovarian cysts of reproductive age, if they are <5 cm in diameter and asymptomatic, they can be closely observed, as 70% of cysts can resolve on their own. Physiologic cysts, characterized by thin unilateral walls and in which the patient has no discomfort such as lower abdominal pain, usually disappear on their own in 2-3 months. If the cysts are <4cm in diameter, the natural regression rate reaches 82.6%, if the cysts are 4-6cm in diameter, the natural regression rate is 63.4%, and if the cysts are 6-8cm in diameter, the natural regression rate is lower, at 28.6%. If the ovarian cyst is >5cm in diameter and persistently growing, the possibility of ovarian tumor should be considered and surgical treatment should be considered. The complete regression of ovarian cysts may take up to 3 months. If ovarian cysts are found by color ultrasound, they need to be observed, and the ultrasound is usually repeated on the 3rd-5th day after the next menstrual period. Don’t worry if a cyst is found first. The next treatment plan will be decided according to the change of the cyst after the follow-up ultrasound.
