Leukocyte lipase is a specific enzyme contained within human leukocytes and is commonly used clinically to detect the presence or absence of leukocytes, as leukocyte esterase is only present in neutrophils and not in other cells. Therefore, it cannot detect other types of leukocytes, but only neutrophils, which are commonly referred to as inflammatory cells. If leukocyte esterase is positive, it indicates the presence of leukocytes, or neutrophils, in the specimen examined, indicating inflammation, but not what pathogenic infection is present. Leukocyte lipase is commonly used in gynecological examinations. If a positive leukocyte esterase is found in the specimen, it indicates gynecological inflammation and requires prompt consultation at a gynecological clinic.
