What to look for in a neurological examination

There are more items in the neurological examination: first, a general examination should be done, and attention should be paid to observe the mental status to determine whether there is memory loss, intellectual impairment, emotional disorder, etc.; observe whether the patient has drowsiness, lethargy, blurred consciousness, coma, and other disorders of consciousness; whether there is fluency in language, and whether there are abnormalities in vision and hearing, etc. Secondly, cranial nerve examination should be done, which can be done for olfactory nerve, trigeminal nerve, facial nerve, optic nerve, as well as bit of auditory nerve, lingual infection, vagus nerve, etc.; eye movements and pupil size should be observed. Again, examination of the motor system should be done to check whether the patient’s muscle contraction ability is weakened, whether there is increased muscle tone or loss of voluntary movement, ataxia, etc. Finally, the sensory system, superficial sensory and deep sensory examinations as well as reflexes such as superficial reflexes, deep reflexes, pathological reflexes, and meningeal irritation should also be done.
