Can you breastfeed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis?

In general, patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis can breastfeed. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, also known as chronic lymphoid thyroiditis, is an autoimmune thyroid disease. When hypothyroidism occurs in Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, it can manifest as weakness, drowsiness, chills and weight gain. The mainstay of treatment for Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism is thyroid hormone replacement therapy, and at the recommended therapeutic dose, very little thyroxine is secreted into breast milk, not enough to cause the infant to develop hyperthyroidism or suppressed TSH secretion. Patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis should have their thyroid function reviewed regularly and take medication and breastfeeding under medical supervision.
