Is it okay to fracture the fifth metatarsal without a cast?

In principle, a fifth metatarsal fracture is not allowed without a cast, but, of course, there is one exclusion, which is that the fracture can be fixed without a cast because the fifth metatarsal fracture is markedly displaced and poorly aligned, and the fracture is fixed with incisional reduction and internal fixation, and a relatively strong and secure internal fixation is used. Other than that, external immobilization in a cast is required, otherwise it is very easy to cause displacement of the broken end of the fifth metatarsal fracture and produce malunion. If the displacement of the fracture is more obvious, once the deformity is achieved, it will seriously affect the walking function of the foot, and even cause severe pain when walking, which will make it impossible to perform normal foot exercises and walk on the ground.
