Fire in the gums

Fire is a concept in Chinese medicine, which often refers to a series of “heat evidence” manifested by “fire and heat evil” attacking the human body or locally. Gum fire is usually caused by prolonged late nights, fatigue, mental stress, dry weather, or low water intake, excessive consumption of spicy and irritating foods, and unbalanced diet structure. Gum fire is mostly manifested as redness, swelling, pain, and even bleeding in the gum area. Patients with mild gum fire symptoms should pay attention to proper rest, drink more water daily to keep the mouth moist; adjust the diet structure, avoid spicy and stimulating foods, choose some heat-clearing and fire-reducing foods, such as bitter melon, amaranth, green beans, lotus seeds, etc. Appropriate fruits such as apple and kiwi can be consumed to supplement vitamins. If the symptoms of gum fire persist without relief, you can follow the doctor’s advice to use Chinese herbs with heat-clearing and detoxifying effects such as watermelon cream and niuhuang detoxification tablets for relief. If the symptoms of gum swelling and pain are serious, you can rinse with hydrogen peroxide solution or rinse with chlorhexidine under the guidance of a doctor, or you can apply topical iodine glycerin or take oral metronidazole and other anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving western medicines for treatment. In addition, it should be noted that fire in the gums may lead to gingivitis, but gingivitis is not only caused by fire in the gums. Gingivitis is mostly caused by plaque deposition due to tooth misalignment and food debris accumulation, which calcifies and forms calculus and stimulates the gums, leading to inflammation of the gum tissue and uncomfortable symptoms such as redness, swelling, itching and bleeding in the gum area. When patients have swollen and painful gums and discomfort, it is recommended to seek timely medical attention to clarify the cause and carry out targeted treatment.
