Can HER2-positive breast cancer be cured?

”The Ministry of Health has launched a breast cancer “Care Campaign”, “The incidence of breast cancer in China is 20 per 100,000, of which HER2-positive breast cancer accounts for 25-30%. Ninety percent of these patients do not receive timely basic treatment. In other words, overall, nearly 30% of breast cancer patients in China are missing out on a good opportunity. This loss is incalculable.” On October 23, under the guidance of the Ministry of Health and the Pathology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, a large-scale breast cancer public welfare campaign called “Operation Care” was launched, with the aim of establishing “action guidelines” for HER2-positive breast cancer, building a platform for action, and promoting the development of breast cancer treatment. The aim of the campaign is to establish a “guide to action” for HER2-positive breast cancer, build a platform for action, promote communication between doctors and patients, and make concerted efforts to change the status quo of HER2-positive breast cancer, which is “a disaster with little attention”. To get half the result or half the result China has 180,000 new cases of breast cancer every year. HER2, also known as human epidermal growth factor receptor, plays an important role in regulating the growth, development and differentiation of cells. Once overexpressed (i.e. HER2 positive), the HER2 factor stimulates cancer cells to grow wildly and become more aggressive, so HER2-positive breast cancer progresses faster, is more malignant, and recurs and metastasizes faster than other types of breast cancer. Some data show that the survival time of HER2-positive breast cancer patients is only half of that of HER2-negative patients if they receive only conventional combination therapy. But conversely, if the HER2 status is determined early and the underlying treatment is received early, such patients in turn have a better chance of survival.” This is like the leverage that has been said in the financial world, when used properly, you can get half the result with twice the effort; when used improperly, you get half the result with twice the effort.” , Chen Jie, vice president of Peking Union Medical College Hospital and professor of pathology, made a clever analogy that many people can hear and understand.” No kidding, HER2 overexpression just has this magical amplifying effect. Therefore, it’s extra important to target this suspicious factor as early as possible and choose a tit-for-tat treatment option.” ”Less than 10% of patients are now getting the right basic treatment for HER2-positive breast cancer. The other 90% of patients’ delayed disease and loss of life are due to the level of domestic testing to be improved and the determination of HER2-positive status to be standardized, but more importantly, there is a gap in treatment philosophy.” Professor Shao Zhimin, Director of Breast Surgery at Shanghai Cancer Hospital and Deputy Director of the Institute of Oncology at Fudan University School of Medicine, hit the nail on the head: “Most clinicians listen to patients with uncertain initial HER2-positive results and do not remind them to undergo retesting with higher accuracy. HER2 status, a must for breast cancer patients To curb HER2 breast cancer, it is not enough for physicians to raise awareness of HER2-positive personalized medicine and identify subtypes early. The patient’s cooperation is the final deciding factor. Unfortunately, many patients do not know much about breast cancer and have little idea of health “insurance”. In reality, many women would rather spend thousands of dollars on beauty shopping than spending a hundred or eighty dollars to buy a “peace of mind” for their breasts. For this reason, the Ministry of Health International Exchange and Cooperation Center, Project Management Department Minister Zhou Jian said with regret: “Breast health is the basis of female charm, the skin does not exist, how will the hair attached? Some female friends chase the trend to be sure to change day by day, but treat health issues, but always old ideas, old brain warp, no planning, no insight, this is to put the root and go to the end, life is a big taboo.” In this regard, Professor Jiang Zefei, director of the Breast Cancer Department of Beijing 307 Hospital, has a deeper experience: “Although epidemiological statistics show that nearly 30% of breast cancer patients are HER2-positive, the consultation rate in clinical outpatient clinics is far below this level.” According to Prof. Jiang, a national survey of 5,480 oncology patients late last year reported that only 57% of patients had their HER2 status determined by getting tested. ”For breast cancer patients, only accurate pathological testing can determine which treatment plan to adopt; otherwise, over-treatment or irrational treatment of patients will aggravate the recurrence of breast cancer and may even shorten their survival time”, Prof. Xu Binghe from Cancer Hospital of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences further pointed out that determining HER2 status has positive significance for all breast cancer patients. According to Zhou Jian, Director of the Project Management Department of the Center for International Exchange and Cooperation of the Ministry of Health, “It is because if HER2-positive breast cancer is not taken seriously, it will be particularly costly; if it is taken seriously, patients will benefit from it, so the Ministry of Health is promoting the ‘Care Action’ for breast cancer in China”. It aims to popularize public education on breast cancer prevention and treatment; help patients and clinicians understand the basic treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer; and support patients to obtain further testing to determine HER2 status for early standardized treatment to prolong life and improve survival quality. In light of international trends, personalized medicine is an important means to address large-scale medical coverage. Especially for cancer, with accurate staging and timely basic treatment, it can greatly save the overall medical cost of society and reduce the loss of life. So, it is not only a question of HER2-positive breast cancer treatment. Shen Haijiao, head of the first business unit of Roche Pharmaceuticals, who participated in this project, said that foreign experience has shown positively that early diagnosis of HER2 status has a significant positive impact on disease prognosis. Herceptin is the basic treatment for HER2-positive breast cancer The experts who attended the press conference of “Operation Care” agreed that the implementation of this public welfare project can promote breast cancer prevention and treatment education in China is not limited to the “awareness month”. This is the meaning of “Operation Care”, which is different from the general disease awareness activities. Biologically targeted therapy is another effective treatment after chemotherapy and endocrine therapy, and is a new milestone in the treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer. Herceptin, developed by Roche Pharmaceuticals, is a targeted therapy for HER2 targets in breast cancer and has shown efficacy in the treatment of both early and advanced (metastatic) breast cancer. Since 1998, Herceptin has been used to treat more than 600,000 HER2-positive breast cancer patients worldwide, and authoritative treatment guidelines both at home and abroad recommend Herceptin as the basic treatment for HER2-positive breast cancer. Prof. Shao Zhimin introduced that Herceptin is very effective for HER2-positive breast cancer patients, reducing the risk of tumor recurrence by 52% and the risk of death by 33% when applied clinically. The recently published HERA (Herceptin Adjuvant Therapy) study showed that after an average of four years of treatment observation, nearly 90 percent of women patients treated with Herceptin remained alive.
