How much eye growth per year is normal

The rate of growth of the eye axis is different for each age group and there is only a reference range, not an exact value. The eye axis refers to the length of the anterior and posterior diameters of the eyeball, which develops and grows gradually with age, and the rate of growth of the eye axis varies with age. At birth, the length of an infant’s eye axis is around 16mm. From birth to around 2 years of age, the eye axis grows around 0.6mm per year; between 2 and 3 years of age, the eye axis grows around 0.5mm. Between the ages of 3 and 12, the annual rate of growth of the eye axis in children is about 0.3 mm. Between the ages of 12 and 15, the rate of growth of the eye axis in children is about 0.2 mm per year, and between the ages of 15 and 18 the growth of the eye axis is about 0.1 mm per year. After the age of 18, the length of the eye axis of the population basically ceases to grow, and stays stable at about 24 mm. It is recommended that patients with abnormal eye axis lengths seek prompt medical attention to evaluate their condition and follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment.
