Chinese medicine to control myeloproliferative tumor symptoms

Myeloproliferative neoplasms present symptoms in descending order of myelofibrosis (MF) > true erythrocytosis (PV) > primary thrombocythemia (ET). The survey showed the percentage of MPN symptoms occurring: severe fatigue (81%), pruritus (53%), night sweats (50%), bone pain (44%), fever (14%), weight loss (13%), and pain in the splenic area (6%). The current Myeloproliferative Neoplasm Symptom Assessment Scale Total Symptom Score (MPN-SAF TSS, also known as the MPN-10). There are 10 points: severe fatigue, early satiety, abdominal discomfort, immobility, pruritus, inattention, night sweats, fever, bone pain and weight loss. Microvascular-related complications: erythema limbosum, migraine, sensory abnormalities, dizziness, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, headache, numbness and tingling sensation. Abdominal related symptoms (early satiety, abdominal discomfort, pain) are associated with structural problems such as splenomegaly, splenic infarction, portal hypertension and intestinal obstruction. For example, the incidence of fatigue PV (85%) ET (72%). Causes included deteriorating health, microthrombosis of the cardiopulmonary vasculature, depression and treatment for MPN. Associated fatigue was related to degree of anemia, transfusion dependence, previous thrombotic bleeding complications, and its severity was related to education level, BMI, female, comorbid depression and excessive smoking and alcohol consumption. It may also be associated with a variety of factor-related disorders including: anemia, hyperalgesia, depression, and lack of exercise lifestyle. Another example is pruritus PV in 65% of cases, with itching, tingling or burning sensations. Causes include exposure to water, physical activity/sweating, alcohol consumption, and temperature changes. Emotional (emotional irritation, anger, hostility, aggression, embarrassment and even suicidal thoughts), cognitive impairment, depressed mood and reduced social activity are associated. Easily overlooked sexual dysfunction, with a 57% incidence of PV, occurs in the erectile phase or in emotional intimacy disorders. Sexual desire disorders are associated with comorbid anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, transfusion requirements, emotional, cognitive, physical and social range of activities, and with other symptoms such as insomnia, depression, night sweats and quality of life. Symptoms resulted in reduced quality of life: MF in 81% > PV in 66% > ET in 57%. Chinese medicine shows good therapeutic prospects for the symptoms of MPN, because each patient presents symptoms of different amount and severity, and the comprehensive four diagnostic examinations and evidence-based treatment can provide individualized treatment for each MPN patient, thus improving the quality of life of MPN patients. What needs to be concerned is the proportion of patients who feel anxious and worried about their physical condition: 91% for MF > 78% for PV > 74% for ET. And TCM can pay attention to both psycho-emotional factors of patients, regulate the mood, de-stress the liver, strengthen the spleen and nourish the heart, and reduce the mental burden of patients.
