Is it possible to be reinfected with HFMD?

HFMD is one of the common infectious diseases caused by enteroviruses, mostly occurring in preschool children, especially in the ≤3-year-old age group with the highest incidence, causing fever and rashes and ulcers on the hands, feet, mouth and other parts of the body, and individual patients can cause fatal complications such as myocarditis, pulmonary edema, and aseptic meningoencephalitis. There are more than 20 types of enteroviruses that can cause HFMD, and coxsackievirus is the most common one. Both adults and children are susceptible to this disease, but many may have been infected with this virus as children and developed antibodies. Since there is more than one virus that causes HFMD, each virus infection will produce antibodies to that virus accordingly, even if the patient is recessively infected, i.e., if the infection does not develop, he or she will basically not get HFMD caused by that virus again in the future, but this does not mean that patients who have had HFMD will not get it again, and other viruses can still be infected. Then people do not need to panic too much, hand washing is the fundamental measure to prevent HFMD. Hand washing should never be underestimated, and proper knowledge of hand washing is important. Under normal circumstances, there is no contact with the source of infection, you can wash your hands with soap or water and just wash your hands clean. If there is direct contact with the patient’s secretions, virus-containing liquid can use disinfectant to wash hands. Experts reminded that disinfectant paper towels can not replace hand washing. As for the time of hand washing is not specified, experts recommend that it is best to be more than 20 seconds.
