Ultrasound is usually required for gynecological diseases, such as uterine fibroids, endometrial polyps, submucosal fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, ovarian cysts, or when there is irregular menstruation with abdominal pain. If you are pregnant, an ultrasound is needed in early pregnancy to determine whether the pregnancy is intrauterine or ectopic, and to see if the fetal heart and bud are developing. Transvaginal ultrasound is more accurate, more definitive in diagnosis and easier to perform than transabdominal ultrasound. However, if the ovaries are higher up, the diagnosis may not be possible with an ultrasound and an abdominal ultrasound may be needed to make the diagnosis.
