It is not normal for pregnant women to have (++) urine ketone bodies. Normal pregnant women’s urine ketone bodies should be negative, and the degree of ketone body appearance is positively correlated with the number of plus signs, from negative to (+), (++), (+++), (++++), with a gradual increase in ketone bodies (+) as the condition gradually worsens. In normal people, glucose is used for energy supply under normal conditions. When the body is deficient in glucose, for example, pregnant women experience frequent nausea and vomiting, resulting in too little eating, a decrease in glucose supply can occur, and then the body needs to use fat for energy supply, and the body uses fat for energy supply while producing ketone bodies, which include acetone, β-hydroxybutyric acid, and acetoacetic acid, and the metabolism is carried out in the liver. If the production of ketone bodies exceeds the metabolic capacity of the liver, ketone bodies can appear in the urine. When ketone bodies appear in the urine of pregnant women, it is important to check whether the ketone bodies are caused by frequent vomiting during pregnancy and not wanting to eat, or whether they are caused by gestational diabetes, because the treatment options for these two types of ketone bodies are completely different.
