How to Treat and Recover from Ligament Tears

Torn ligaments are usually treated and recovered from depending on the severity of the tear, either conservatively or surgically.
1. Conservative treatment: During the acute period of two weeks after the injury, the torn ligament should be protected by bandage, brace or plaster. When resting, the affected limb should be elevated with a pillow to promote venous return and reduce swelling, and ice packs should be used to reduce inflammation and muscle spasm or pain.
Patients need to stop activities, avoid weight bearing on the affected limb, and let the injured part get still and rest. After the two-week acute phase, if the localized swelling and pain have largely disappeared, localized heat therapy, joint stretching activities and muscle strength training can be performed.
Moderate torn ligament injury should not remove the brace too early, so as to avoid the ligament not fully healed to tear again, which will lead to chronic joint instability.
2. Surgery: For severe torn ligament injuries, surgery can be considered. Rehabilitation exercises should be carried out actively after the surgery to prevent localized joint adhesions from affecting the recovery after the surgery.
After the ligament tear, it is recommended to consult a doctor in time, under the guidance of the doctor, so as to avoid the injury aggravated by improper self-operation.
