Identification of pharyngitis in Chinese medicine

Pharyngitis can be categorized as “laryngeal paralysis (redness, swelling and pain in the pharynx, or dryness, foreign body sensation, or itchy discomfort in the pharynx, and difficulty in swallowing)” in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). According to TCM diagnosis, it can be divided into the syndrome of external attack, the syndrome of heat in the lungs and stomach, the syndrome of yin deficiency in the lungs and kidneys, the syndrome of spleen qi weakness, the syndrome of yang deficiency in the spleen and kidneys, and the syndrome of phlegm congealment and blood stasis. Evil attack syndrome, manifested as redness, swelling and pain in the pharynx, unfavorable swallowing, accompanied by fever and cold, headache, cough and phlegm. The treatment needs to dispel wind and evils, and promote lung and pharynx. 2. Lung and stomach heat syndrome, manifesting as redness, swelling and pain in the pharynx, difficulty in swallowing, granular redness, swelling or pus spots at the base of the throat, fever, thirst and desire to drink, smelly breath, and dry stools, etc. The treatment needs to clear away heat and detoxify the toxin and eliminate swelling to benefit the pharynx. 3. Lung and kidney yin deficiency, manifested as dryness of the pharynx, burning pain, dry cough with little sputum, or sputum with blood, or a burst of fever, night sweating, etc. The treatment needs to nourish the yin and fluid, and lower the pharynx. Treatment needs to nourish the yin fluid, reduce fire and benefit the pharynx. 4. Weakness of spleen qi, manifested as throat discomfort with phlegm stickiness, dry mouth without wanting to drink water, easy nausea, hiccups and acid reflux from time to time, aggravated by exertion, fatigue, poor appetite. Treatment needs to benefit qi and strengthen the spleen to restore the elevation function of the spleen. 5. Yang deficiency of the spleen and kidney, manifested as foreign body sensation in the throat, thin and white sputum, fear of cold, cold limbs, cold pain in the waist and knees, nocturnal urination, diarrhea and so on. Treatment needs to tonify the spleen and kidney, warm the yang and benefit the pharynx. 6. Phlegm coagulation and blood stasis syndrome, manifesting as sticky feeling in the pharynx, dark red mucous membrane in the throat, easy nausea and vomiting, chest tightness and discomfort. Treatment needs to dispel phlegm and remove blood stasis, and disperse knots to benefit the pharynx.
