The first year of college, Zhang is recently in a very bad mood: in recent months the body began to lose shape, looking more and more fat, waist circumference more and more thick, and eyebrows, sweat hair more and more heavy, face constantly grow acne, belly also grew a lot of unsightly thick lines. When she came home from winter break, her parents were shocked and felt that her daughter had changed, so they rushed to bring her to our hospital. Through our examination, it turned out that Zhang was suffering from Cushing’s syndrome caused by adrenal adenoma, and we removed the adenoma on Zhang’s left adrenal gland through laparoscopic surgery. When we saw Zhang again six months later, she had recovered into a beautiful little girl. Cushing’s syndrome is a rare disease with an incidence of about 0.7-2.4 per million population. According to the etiology, Cushing’s syndrome can be divided into two categories, namely ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone)-dependent and non-ACTH-dependent. The former is commonly associated with ACTH-secreting pituitary adenomas and ectopic ACTH syndrome; the latter is most commonly associated with adrenal adenomas. The main clinical manifestations of Cushing’s syndrome include centripetal obesity, full-moon face, buffalo back, increased and thickened hair, thin skin, acne, purple skin lines, hypertension, drowsiness and depression, menstrual disorders, and abnormal glucose tolerance. When unexplained above symptoms appear, you should promptly go to the urology or endocrinology department of the hospital. The main treatment for Cushing’s syndrome caused by adrenal adenoma or adenocarcinoma is surgery. Currently, the best surgical procedure is laparoscopic adrenal tumor resection, which can be done by making three small holes of less than 1cm in the waist. Long-term hormone replacement therapy is required after surgery. During the period of medication, regular review at the hospital is needed to gradually reduce the dosage to stop the medication. If the postoperative medication is not timely and standardized, it may lead to adrenal crisis, which may endanger the patient’s life in serious cases.
