According to “The Treatise on Typhoid Fever”, Chai Hu plus Long Bone and Oyster Soup is composed of Chai Hu, Long Bone, Scutellariae, Ginger, Lead Dan, Ginseng, Cinnamon Branches, Poria, Pinellia, Semixia, and Rhubarb, etc. It is capable of reconciling and clearing away heat, and calming and tranquilizing the mind. It is used in the treatment of typhoid fever with chills and fever, bitter fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, agitation and frantic restlessness, delirium (gibberish) at times, and difficulty in turning one’s side with heaviness of the body.
Chai Hu plus Long Bone and Oyster Soup is used in epilepsy, neurosis, Meniere’s syndrome and hypertension with chest fullness (swelling and discomfort in the chest) and agitation and panic as the main evidence.
In this formula, Chai Hu, Gui Zhi and Scutellaria Baicalensis harmonize with the inside to relieve the outside; Long Bone, Oyster and Lead Dan calm the mind (using ores and other medicines to stabilize the mind); Semixia and Ginger harmonize the stomach and lower the rebelliousness of the stomach (harmonize the stomach qi and make the upward rebellious qi to descend); Poria sets the mind at ease; and Panax ginseng and Jujubae nourish the qi and nourish the camps, which work together to conciliate and clear away the heat and calm the mind in fright.
