The majority of older adults with hypertension need to take blood pressure-lowering medications every day, but a small percentage of older adults with hypertension may not need to take blood pressure-lowering medications if their blood pressure can be controlled within the target range through active lifestyle management. If the blood pressure cannot be controlled to the target range through lifestyle management, or if the elderly have grade 2 or higher hypertension, or if the risk stratification of hypertension is high or very high, they need to take long-term blood pressure-lowering drugs to control their blood pressure to the target range. Only by actively lowering blood pressure through standardized antihypertensive treatment can the blood pressure of elderly hypertensive patients be controlled in the target range for a long time, which can effectively protect the target organs of heart, brain and kidney and prevent various complications of hypertension, and ultimately improve the long-term prognosis of elderly hypertensive patients.
