Kidney surgery will not damage the phrenic nerve if it does not involve the phrenic nerve and its surrounding tissues. However, if the kidney surgery is more extensive, the phrenic nerve may be damaged. There are many types of kidney surgeries. Kidney stone, tumor removal surgery or kidney tissue repair surgery are common kidney surgeries. When the surgical incision and operation position are far away from the phrenic nerve, the entire operation process will not cause phrenic nerve injury. Injury to the phrenic nerve from renal surgery usually occurs during larger renal surgeries. In the event of kidney rupture, intra-abdominal hemorrhage causing renal impairment, or extensive renal tissue necrosis, the scope of surgical operation may involve the phrenic nerve or the entire intra-abdominal tissue nerves, and thus may cause damage to the phrenic nerve and result in adverse postoperative reactions. Patients opting for renal surgery should communicate with their doctors in advance to understand the possible intraoperative injuries and postoperative complications.
