Complications after major thyroidectomy

The postoperative complications after thyroidectomy mainly include the following: 1. Blood leakage from the surgical wound or collapse of the trachea due to long-term tumor compression or thyroid nodule compression may affect breathing and cause respiratory distress or even asphyxia in severe cases, so bedside tracheotomy kits need to be prepared after surgery and tracheotomy needs to be performed in time if necessary. 2. The damage to the superior laryngeal nerve, once the damage to the superior laryngeal nerve may appear low voice or choking and coughing. Injury to one side of the recurrent laryngeal nerve usually results in hoarseness, while injury to the bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve can cause respiratory distress and even death.3. Twitching of the hands and feet is usually seen in large parts of the thyroid gland, damaging the dorsal parathyroid gland and causing hypocalcemia, which usually requires calcium supplements.4. Inadequate preoperative preparation for hyperthyroidism may cause postoperative hyperthermia and other hyperthyroid crisis.
