Symptoms of atlantoaxial instability include neck symptoms, head and neck symptoms, spinal cord and nerve compression, and ataxia.
1. Neck symptoms: mainly manifested as pain, limitation of movement and joint stiffness when flexing, extending or rotating the neck.
2. Head and pillow symptoms: Atlantoaxial joint instability, compression of vertebral artery, resulting in insufficient blood supply to the brain, dizziness, head and pillow pain and other symptoms.
3. Symptoms of spinal cord and nerve compression: joint instability compresses the spinal cord or nerves, resulting in compression symptoms, which are mainly manifested as abnormal sensation, decreased muscle strength, unsteady walking, the feeling of stepping on cotton, and abnormal fine movements such as writing.
4. Ataxia: unsteady gait, swaying limbs, uneven eyeball rotation, and increased muscle incoordination.
