Surgery is not recommended in most cases for scoliosis patients who are 55 years old. However, if the patient does have relevant indications for surgery, such as compression of the thoracic organs or a particularly severe deformity, surgical treatment is still required. At this age, osteoporosis may occur gradually due to disorders of bone metabolism and hormone levels. Surgical treatment of these patients can lead to pathologic fractures around pedicle screws. In addition, patients in this age group do not have the same demand for spinal shape and athletic function as younger patients. Considering the above factors, if these patients do not have particularly severe scoliosis, they can be treated conservatively. It is recommended that these patients go to the spine surgery department of some regular hospitals, or even higher level hospitals, to finalize the relevant treatment plan.
