Should postoperative patients be given a highly nutritious diet or a light diet?

Generally speaking, in the short period after surgery, the gastrointestinal tract is often in a state of inhibition due to anesthesia, surgical trauma, postoperative medication, decreased physical strength and other factors, so at this time, patients are often instructed by their doctors to maintain a light diet. A light diet helps the recovery of the gastrointestinal tract dynamics and also helps the absorption of nutrients and protects the gastrointestinal mucosa. As time goes by, patients after discharge from hospital or two weeks after thoracic surgery (it often takes one month for post-operative patients with esophageal cancer), when the function of gastrointestinal tract basically recovers, the organism is in a state of deprivation due to the consumption of a large amount of energy during hospitalization, at this time, a high-quality nutritious diet can be given appropriately to replenish energy and nutrients, but at the same time, attention should be paid to a balanced diet and a gradual process.
