The efficacy of Jade Bamboo in water is to quench thirst and promote generation of body fluid, moisturize dryness and nourish yin.
1. Quenching thirst and promoting generation of body fluid. It is used in treating thirst and dry throat, thirst and internal heat, and loss of appetite caused by deficiency of gastric yin (insufficient yin fluid in the stomach). It is often combined with herbs such as Gypsum, Maitong, Sha Shen, Zhi Mu, Smallpox Powder, etc., e.g. Sha Shen Maitong Tang.
2. Moistening dryness and nourishing yin can treat cough and dryness caused by deficiency of lung yin, which often manifests as hoarseness, dry cough with little phlegm and coughing up blood. It is often combined with herbs such as Szechuan Pei Mu (川贝母), Sha Shen (沙参), Mulberry Leaf (桑叶), Maitong (麦冬), and Dihuang (生地黄).
The efficacy of Chinese herbs is limited when drinking in water, and the effect varies from person to person. In addition, the adverse effects of taking yuzhu are unclear, and it is contraindicated for people with phlegm-dampness and stagnant qi, and should be taken with caution for people with spleen deficiency and loose stools (scanty, unformed feces).
