What is dilated pupil examination

A dilated pupil exam is an ophthalmologic exam performed after dilating the pupil. Commonly used dilating medications include atropine drops and compound tropicamide drops. In normal people, the iris is in motion and can make the pupil larger or smaller. After the administration of pupil dilating medication, the pupil can continue to dilate for a period of time, such as dilating the pupil for optometry, paralyzing the ciliary muscle for optometric refractive examinations, and fundus examinations, where the pupil is dilated to examine the retina, optic nerve, macula, and retinal blood vessels for abnormalities, etc. The dilated pupil can be used to see the peripheral part of the fundus to prevent missed diagnoses. Dilated pupils can also be used for treatment of iritis, sclerositis, trauma, and malignant glaucoma.
