Large tonsils may be caused by physiological factors of lymphatic tissue proliferation, or by pathological factors such as inflammatory stimulation and tumor invasion. 1. Physiological hypertrophy: children aged 3 to 5 years old can develop lymphatic masses in the pharynx due to active or rapid proliferation of lymphatic tissues, thus causing physiological hypertrophy of the tonsils. 2. Chronic tonsillitis: if tonsils suffer from bacterial or viral infection, stimulation by adverse physical and chemical factors and frequent contact with allergens, it will often lead to pathological hypertrophy of tonsils, which can cause edema, congestion, pus and other changes of tonsils, and it may also have symptoms of sore throat and fever. 3. Tumor invasion: one side of the adult tonsils are enlarged, the surface of the tonsils is covered with squamous epithelium, and the lymphatic tissues within, corresponding malignant tumors may occur, and the surface of the tonsils may be nodular; cauliflower-like, surface ulcers; or the surface is smooth, and the tonsils are spherical and enlarged.
