Epilepsy-related Knowledge Series

What are the causes of recurrent epilepsy? Clinical findings over the years have shown that many recurrences in patients with epilepsy are almost always related to the lack of standardized diagnosis and treatment. There are many patients who start treatment with significant results. As soon as they see that they have the efficacy and have not had seizures for some time, they start to be careless and stop the treatment on their own, which is the most likely cause of recurrent seizures. Most of these patients and their families think that they are well because they have not had any attacks recently and their lives and work are not affected. In fact, the absence of seizures at this time is the result of drug control, which does not mean that the neuronal function of the brain has completely returned to normal, let alone the complete elimination of the disease. If you stop treatment at this time, the symptoms will appear again, even more serious than the previous seizures, entering a vicious circle, forming a refractory epilepsy. The patient and family must have the understanding that epilepsy is a disease with a relatively long course and relatively difficult to treat, and after the seizures are controlled, a longer period of maintenance treatment is still required. Psychological adjustment of epilepsy patients? Due to the fear of seizures, patients themselves have excessive psychological pressure and poor mental capacity. Also, because of illness, poor physical fitness, stimulation by adverse factors in life and irregular treatment as mentioned above, they are prone to recurrence of epilepsy. The recurrence of epilepsy brings more harm to the physical and mental health of patients. Patients with epilepsy and their families should raise their awareness of epilepsy and enhance their knowledge about epilepsy prevention and treatment. Family members should communicate more with professional doctors to help patients treat the disease correctly, treat it on a psychological level, solve the specific problems faced by patients patiently and meticulously, and behave in a more encouraging and supportive way. A good psychological environment and a warm living environment can likewise reduce the recurrence of epilepsy. What should children with epilepsy pay attention to before they start school? All school-age children with infrequent seizures and normal intelligence can be enrolled in school. After entering school, you should tell your teacher about your child’s condition and get their understanding and help. At the same time, it should be made clear to the classmates through the teacher so that they are not afraid, especially do not let them discriminate and alienate him or her. They should help enthusiastically so that the students with epilepsy have a warm and friendly living and learning environment. Do not reprimand or scold your child when he or she has poor test scores or bad studies, but be patient, induce and inspire, and praise him or her for slight progress. At the same time, do not drop out of school or drop out of school because of several episodes. Keeping the child at home and not allowing him (her) contact with the outside world is more detrimental to the treatment of the disease and is detrimental to physical and mental health.
