How long does it take to recover from epilepsy caused by viral encephalitis

How long does it take to recover from epilepsy caused by viral encephalitis cannot be generalized; in most cases, epileptic symptoms subside when viral encephalitis is cured, but if viral encephalitis results in permanent epileptic foci being left in the diseased parts of the brain, secondary epilepsy can result, which is a more complicated condition that may be difficult to recover from and requires long-term medication.
Viral encephalitis is a disease in which a virus invades the brain parenchyma of the central nervous system, and the disease can be characterized by abnormal discharges during acute seizures due to changes in the permeability of the nerve cells, which can therefore lead to the symptoms of epileptic seizures. In most patients, the symptoms of epilepsy subside as the viral encephalitis is cured.
However, there are still some patients who have permanent epileptic foci left in the brain after the acute phase of viral encephalitis, causing secondary epilepsy. If the epileptic seizures no longer occur after stopping the medication after 2~3 years of treatment, it can be considered as cured; if the epileptic seizures reoccur after stopping the medication, the epileptic seizures can only be controlled by taking medication for a long period of time, and it may be difficult to recover.
If viral encephalitis with epilepsy is diagnosed, please follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment.
