The leaves of the incense tree are generally not used as traditional Chinese medicine, and the resin-containing wood of the incense is often used in medicine for its pain-relieving, vomit-relieving, and asthma-relieving effects. Incense is the resin-containing wood of the Ruixiang family of plants. The flavor is pungent, bitter, and slightly warm in nature. It belongs to the spleen, stomach and kidney meridians. It has the effects of moving qi and relieving pain (relieving pain by regulating the body’s qi), warming and stopping vomiting (treating vomiting caused by gastric cold by warming the spleen and stomach), and calming asthma (astringing the qi to alleviate coughing and wheezing). It is used for chest and abdominal distension and pain, vomiting and retching (hiccup) caused by stomach cold, and asthma caused by kidney deficiency. Shenxiang is pungent, warm, and helps to promote heat, so it should be used with caution for people with yin deficiency and fire exuberance, and also for people with qi deficiency and subsidence. Shenxiang should be taken after the decoction. It is recommended to use the medicine under the guidance of a doctor.
