I. Introduction of the department: Cardiothoracic surgery is one of the earliest units to carry out heart surgery in South China. With rigorous style and challenging spirit, it has created brilliant achievements in the field of critical valve surgery in the 1980s, and the success rate of saving and treating critical heart valve diseases is among the highest in the country, which has established a good brand effect in South China. With the progress of the times and the development of science and technology, all comrades in our department keep pace with the times and forge ahead. There are 30 medical and nursing staffs in the department, and most of the physicians have doctor and master’s degrees. The nursing team has been carefully selected and strictly trained to form a fighting collective with high quality service and able to bear hardships and work hard. Our department is equipped with an independent ICU with modern monitoring system, the most advanced ventilator, STK and Jostra extracorporeal circulation machine, intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation pump, automatic blood gas analyzer and other advanced laboratory equipment, which provides good conditions for the treatment of cardiothoracic surgery and the development of the department. Second, advantageous characteristic technology: Cardiothoracic Surgery Department has done a lot of work in clinical diagnosis and treatment and experimental research in rheumatic heart disease, coronary heart disease, congenital heart disease, chest tumor, chest trauma, etc., and achieved satisfactory results. Special feature one: the surgical treatment of critical heart valves is at the advanced level in China. Our department is one of the first units in South China to carry out heart valve surgery for rheumatic heart disease, and has performed several thousand cases of heart valve replacement or heart valve shaping surgery so far with high success rate. In particular, the clinical treatment and experimental research on critically ill patients, whose achievements have reached the leading level in China, have won one second prize of the Army Science and Technology Progress Award, two third prizes, and one third prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. In recent years, we have carried out minimally invasive heart valve replacement, reducing surgical trauma and achieving cosmetic effects; improved the surgical methods of revalve replacement, multivalve replacement, and valve replacement with preservation of total subvalvular structures, resulting in a significant reduction in surgical complications and a significant increase in the success rate; carried out research on Ross surgery; and carried out intraoperative bloodless or less blood, greatly reducing the complications caused by blood transfusion. Feature 2: Satisfactory results in the surgical treatment of severe coronary heart disease and macrovascular disease. The incidence of coronary heart disease in China is increasing, which seriously affects the quality of life of patients. Our department has carried out such difficult procedures as coronary artery bypass grafting for multiple lesions, coronary artery bypass grafting and ventricular wall aneurysm removal, coronary artery bypass grafting and mitral valve and aortic valve replacement at the same time, emergency coronary artery bypass grafting, non-stop coronary artery bypass grafting, etc., all of which have been successful. The patient still felt shortness of breath before the operation to being able to climb Baiyun Mountain after the operation, which shows that the patient’s quality of life improved significantly after the operation. Total and hemi-arch replacement of thoracic aortic aneurysm, adoption of superior cavity reverse perfusion brain protection technique, and minimally invasive intracavitary isolation techniques have led to significant results in surgical treatment of thoracic aortic aneurysm (including Marfan’s syndrome). Feature 3: Comprehensive treatment of esophageal cancer greatly extends the survival period of patients and significantly improves their quality of life. The current treatment is based on surgery combined with chemotherapy and radiotherapy to achieve ideal results. Our department has performed thousands of cases of esophageal cancer surgery with low complications and satisfactory results. In recent years, we have carried out jejuno-esophageal and colonic-esophageal reconstruction of the digestive tract and treated many cases of multiple esophageal cancer, esophageal cancer complicated by gastric cancer and esophageal cancer complicated by lung cancer with good results. He has carried out the treatment of large esophageal defects with sternocleidomastoid muscle flap transfer and the study on the perioperative management of radical esophageal cancer in ultra advanced age (over 80 years old), with satisfactory results. Feature 4: Research on the comprehensive treatment of lung diseases as well as lung cancer has achieved satisfactory results. The incidence of lung cancer has increased significantly in recent years, seriously threatening the health of human beings. Based on the continuous improvement of surgical techniques, our department has carried out difficult pulmonary angioplasty, bronchoplasty and other techniques, as well as minimally invasive surgical methods, combined with chemotherapy and radiotherapy and other comprehensive treatments, so that lung cancer patients can get good treatment results. Feature 5: The treatment of infant and child surgical diseases has been developed rapidly. Our department has successively carried out surgical treatment of congenital heart disease in infants and children with the smallest weight of 2.5 kg. Successful surgical correction of congenital esophageal atresia and congenital diaphragmatic hernia in infants and children has achieved satisfactory results. Last year, we had successfully performed lobectomy on a baby just 24 hours old, which was the first case in the world after literature search. Feature 6: Minimally invasive thoracic and cardiac surgery has been popularized. Minimally invasive thoracic surgery can reduce surgical trauma, hospitalization time and hospitalization cost. Over the years, our department has devoted itself to research in this area. We have carried out the first micro-incision atrial defect occlusion in the central and southern regions; minimally invasive heart valve replacement; thoracoscopic lobectomy and esophageal reconstruction; minimally invasive funnel chest surgery (Nuss surgery, thoracoscopic-assisted funnel chest correction); thoracic aortic aneurysm intracavitary isolation, etc. Special feature 7: The treatment of chest trauma is the traditional feature of our department. Every year, we treat a large number of patients with serious chest trauma, and we are famous for timely and accurate rescue and high success rate. Our department has successfully treated many patients with severe chest trauma such as multiple rib fractures, hemopneumothorax, severe pulmonary contusion, pulmonary edema, lung laceration, bronchial rupture, heart rupture and esophageal rupture. He has held the national continuing education program “Progress in the treatment of severe chest trauma”.
