Do broken ribs heal on their own?

Whether a rib fracture can heal on its own depends on the degree of the fracture. Minor fractures will heal on their own, while more serious rib fractures, especially multiple rib fractures combined with hemopneumothorax, will not heal on their own and require treatment in orthopedics or thoracic surgery. If the fracture is a minor one or two fractures, with simple bone fracture, pain and restricted activity, no major displacement, no damage to the surrounding soft tissues, especially the lungs, and no impact on breathing or the stability of the thorax, it can be self-healed by conservative treatment such as bed rest and chest banding; if it is a multiple rib fracture, with significant displacement, deformation of the thorax when breathing (paradoxical breathing), touching In case of multiple rib fractures with significant displacement, thoracic deformity when breathing (abnormal breathing), bone rubbing sensation when touching, difficulty in breathing, etc., self-healing is not possible and in order to avoid deformed healing of the fracture, surgical treatment is necessary to reset the misaligned bone and internal fixation with a plate. In about 6 weeks, the patient should go to the hospital for X-ray examination to check the healing situation.
