The Chinese Pharmacopoeia records that licorice has only five effects, not seven, which are: tonifying the spleen and qi, clearing heat and removing toxins, expelling phlegm and relieving coughs, easing pain (relieving the symptoms of more urgent pain), and harmonizing medicines (harmonizing the properties of different traditional Chinese medicines). Licorice in water is limited in its efficacy and may not meet the standard of the herb.
It is used for weak spleen and stomach, tiredness and fatigue, palpitation and shortness of breath, cough and phlegm, contractile pain in the epigastrium (stomach and abdomen) and limbs, carbuncle, swelling and sores, and relieving the toxicity and potency of drugs.
Licorice is sweet and neutral in nature, and belongs to the heart, lung, spleen and stomach meridians. It can harmonize all medicines and has the effect of relieving the potency and toxicity of other medicines. It is used in the treatment of weak spleen and stomach, tiredness and weakness, palpitation and shortness of breath, cough and phlegm, contracted pain in the epigastrium, abdomen and limbs, carbuncle, swelling and sores.
In addition, this drug has more clinical applications, not only can be made into compound licorice tablets, but also with honeysuckle, half-summer, dry ginger, raw rhizome and many other Chinese herbs. It is possible that the efficacy of licorice infusion is not as good as that of the herbs, and for the above mentioned conditions it only relieves and cannot achieve therapeutic effect.
