What is the pain at the back of the head?

Pain in the back of the head, if it is a persistent swelling, aching, or dull pain, is mostly considered to be a tension headache, mostly occurring in young adults, mostly persistent, and can last for days, weeks, months, or years. Most of the patients suffer from bilateral frontotemporal and cervical pain, but also the whole top of the head, and most of them feel tightness and pressure. Treatment is mainly psychological and symptomatic. Psychological treatment is indicated for pregnant women, children, and lactating patients. Symptomatic treatment includes diclofenac, ibuprofen and indomethacin. If the patient has paroxysmal throbbing, pins-and-needles headache, it is considered as neuropathic headache and is mainly treated with carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine. The clinical classification is primary and secondary. Primary headaches are mainly caused by various causes of nerve demyelination resulting in abnormal discharge; secondary headaches often have a clear etiology, and the main causes include intracranial tumors and intracranial inflammation.
